"I wish I'd stuck with piano lessons as a kid."
"I wish I'd learned to play piano as a kid."
Have you ever caught yourself saying or thinking one of those statements?
Like most adults, maybe you think it's too late to learn to play the piano. It's just kid stuff and you can't teach an old dog new tricks, right?
Wrong!
Adults are great learners! They have passion, ambition, and drive. They are more committed than third graders because they are keenly aware that time is fleeting.
The one thing adults don't have is the luxury of time. Making a commitment to a traditional weekly lesson schedule is very difficult, if not impossible.
And this is where the dream often dies.
But it doesn't have to. Not with on-line lessons, videos, and DVDs. New media combines with formal instruction to bring the joy of piano playing to adults.
Now you can have a private teacher that you only pay for once and will cater to your every whim, never complaining about schedule changes, and patiently explaining concepts to you as often as you require.
A little shy? Most adults are. No worries here. There is no embarrassing recital, no class of students staring at you. Gain confidence in the privacy of your home and play the way you want to.
Most on-line piano instruction packages give you a free "peek" into the course by means of a free series of lessons. Take advantage of them and put them to use right way.
If you aren't sure of something or need more explanation, write to the course instructor for help.
Pick the style of music you like best. Jazz? Pop? Gospel? Whatever you like, you can play it.
Aside from the fun of making music, learning to play the piano as an adult is a great way of maintaining mental sharpness, too.
Pop that DVD in when you get home at 8:00 p.m. and have your lesson. Practice when you like. Your piano lesson is always waiting for you. And don't worry if you don't have 30 minutes a day to practice. Squeeze in 10 minutes here and there. Learning in short, frequent bursts is a better way to learn, anyway.
Most importantly, don't ever put yourself down for not making more progress or becoming more proficient. Instead, congratulate yourself on what you have accomplished. Expect success!
The dream is still alive!
